Digital Activation

Rebuilding Together is a national nonprofit dedicated to improving the safety and health of homes within communities that need assistance. Veterans with disabilities, women who have suffered trauma, and families displaced by natural disasters have all benefited from the organization’s work. To communicate the importance of their mission, we created a web application that brought their story to life in a compelling and interactive way.

Challenge

While Rebuilding Together has a large nationwide presence, most people don’t know how to get involved on a local level if there is no rebuilding projected located nearby. Not to mention that most people don’t have any idea what goes into rebuilding a home. They needed an engaging digital solution that would allow people everywhere to learn about the critical work they do every day and the funds it takes to accomplish it all.

Idea

To help people understand the benefits of their work, we wanted people to experience their work. We built an interactive digital house representing various repair projects, which allowed people to virtually “get their hands dirty,” and became the vehicle for encouraging donations through educational content, a leaderboard, and gamified social sharing.

Bringing It to Life

Based on audience demographics, we designed the experience to be mobile-first, with a large-screen counterpart. While clicking around the virtual house, people were able to discover stories and watch videos of real people who have benefited from the generosity of the organization.

Upon selecting different rooms or structures, people could make a contribution towards the real life cost of a specific repair, letting them visualize the urgency and immediate impact of their generosity.

Leaderboard

We also created a digital leaderboard that listed the highest donors alongside overall donation data, and the progress towards the campaign goal. When people made a donation and shared on social media, we added an element of gamification by allowing them to post a custom badge stating what they had fixed and encouraging friends to jump in and join the cause.

Results

The ease of the experience and interactive approach generated instant engagement, shareability, and awareness. Rebuilding Together met their goal of $30,000 within just two weeks of launch – months faster than they anticipated.
