Our dads have given many lessons and pointers: Wear your seatbelt. Try your best. Listen to others. Share. Work hard.
Yesterday, we celebrated our Fathers. But we also don’t think that one day was enough. So we’re taking another day to reflect on and celebrate our dads. All the ‘dad jokes’ we rolled our eyes at. And for every lesson that has shaped us into who we are.
Here’s a collection of wise words CTPers have taken to heart over the years. (Thanks dad.)
Funny but true.
Always wear a belt. – Will
Don’t put your thumb in your fist when you punch someone. You’ll break it, and they’ll laugh at you. – Lindsey
Never let the truth get in the way of a good story. – Katherine
Always go for the Reuben sandwich. – Sam
Do what you love.
My dad taught me that you don’t have to be loud to be respected, but you don’t have to be all that quiet either, in the off-chance that you think of something funny or interesting to say. He taught me about tact, in a word, which can feel like a lost art sometimes. – Dustin
He taught me the value of listening, the power of honesty, and the rewards of building things with your own two hands. – Steve
He taught me work ethic, integrity, accountability, instilled confidence in me when I needed it and kicked my butt when I needed it. “Responsibility,” he said, “is doing what you have to do, when you have to do it, whether you like it or not.” – Mark F.
He taught me that hard work pays off and to always believe in myself. – Dave
He continues to teach me to give 110% with everything I do, and to never settle. – Kelsie
Life is, well life.
I thought my dad invented the Golden Rule. He always treated everyone with kindness and respect. The advice I remember him giving me most was, “Never give someone a reason to question your character or your integrity.” – Mark B.
How to tell a story and a great joke. – Christine
Life is built from who you have, not what you have. – Lizzie
He taught me so much through his actions, not just his words. – Lauren
The cream always rises to the top. – Andrea
He taught me about acceptance and never taking our own hardships too personally. “You win some and you lose some” was his reaction to hearing his condition was terminal. And I’ve never forgotten the grace and courage he taught many of us in that moment. – Grant
My dad taught me everything I know about being a great dad. – Alex
He taught me life is short, give it you’re all while you’re here- Courtney
“Find something you love,” he has always said, “and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.” – Todd
He constantly reminded us that “a joke is not a joke at someone else’s expense.” And he has shown us to never let someone be picked on or left out. Stand up for those who are ostracized and push back against bullies. Never has that advice been more appropriate. – Brian
He taught me that I can’t let fear paralyze me into indifference – Isabella
The original Mike Jordan – owner of a paving company in ME. Never met a problem he couldn’t figure out or fix himself. I couldn’t possibly pick my favorite thing he’s taught me over the years, but perhaps the one I enjoy using around my house the most is: “The goal in life is to be boring.” Which was him saying do whatever you damn well like in satisfying your ambitions, but don’t do it at the expense of others. – Tyler
